The St John’s Educational Trust Astro Turf
“School is a building which has four walls with tomorrow inside” Lon Watters
It has been almost a year to date since we broke ground, so we are all extremely relieved to finally be able to officially open our semi wet astro turf. It has not been an easy task, and none of this would have been possible without an enormous effort from many individuals, companies and entities.
This type of turf has been designed for locations where there is a lack of an abundance of year-round water. It is sand dressed, so can play dry but it also has a (soon to be connected) built-in underground irrigation system that can evenly disburse 6,000 litres in 6 minutes across the whole area, thereby allowing the Turf to also play wet.
We had a successful initial testing of the asphalt layer by the FIH (International Hockey Federation) and require a second round of testing to be done, in the near future, in order to hopefully achieve FIH Certification to host international matches.
Provision is being made to erect 18-metre tower lights for night games. We hope and aim to complete all infrastructure works by the end of July 2019. Thereafter (finances depending) we will connect the generator, the irrigation pumps and complete the erection of the towers and lights.
This mammoth project would never have been possible without the hard work and dedication from all those involved, and we thank everyone once again for their involvement and commitment.
