On Wednesday, our Form 3 boys returned from their educational camp. One of the purposes of this camp is to show the boys that education doesn’t only happen in the classroom. The camp, run by one of our Old Boys @mitchrileyproguide, is designed to teach the boys useful outdoor skills.
Here are some of things our boys learnt:
- identifying flora and fauna
- identifying and tracking animal spoor
- recognising warning calls
- a general respect and understanding for the bush
- how to cook over an open fire
- fishing for a variety of fish species
As well as the above, we climbed to Rupert Fothergill’s plaque in the Matusadona mountains (something that has probably been seen by less than 100 people)
We also did an island clean-up – the boys filled 15 bin bags of rubbish that had washed up on the shore
On the game drives, the boys learnt about gestation periods of various animals, as well as what the uses are of leaves from particular plants and even how elephant dung is medicinal!
Thank you to @spurwingisland and @mitchrileyproguide for being such fantastic hosts and teachers, and for giving our boys such a memorable experience
